Artist’s Statement

Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Digital Mixed Media


I began my painting life as a watercolourist, but quickly became intrigued with exploring the
possibilities of other materials such as mylar, encaustic and photo-based digital mixed media.
Last year I drew or painted a postcard a day - with gaps for interruption! I then journaled them
and mailed them to myself. This enabled me to distance myself from them with a view to creating
a larger body of work.

My present Artist practice, is based on the Paul Klee idea of "taking your line for a walk". These
scribbles have taken on a life of their own, emerging from a subconscious world I have never encountered before which are the result of a year of turmoil.

As a relief from these, I am working on a series photographed through glass, bringing me to a
place of clarity and serenity.

For many years I have been exploring my overarching fascination with the ephemeral: obscuring and revealing traces and ghosts of times past, present and future.
The focus of my work has been, and still is, figurative painting and drawing.
I am also working on a series of postcards charting a year in the life of my garden, reflecting on the memories of the footprints left behind.
To this end I have found that working with watercolor, encaustic and photo-based digital mixed media and other materials afford me the ability to convey a sense of memory through some degree of transparency.
